Our love and sympathy to Margaret and John, Meredith and Scott and Brett and of course Aubrey. What a special mom and grandma and great grandma you have lost but what precious memories of a great lady. We had just moved from Steinbach to Winnipeg and our house was not ready for Thanksgiving but between her and Margaret, they made sure we got in on a lovely Thanksgiving meal in Steinbach and best of all, a wonderful visit. She, along with Linda Peters were special guests at our retirement party. We were only allowed a few guests and of course we had to choose wisely and I think we did a great job.
She was always an encourager and those kinds of people are a rare gem. Thank you family for sharing her with our world as well as so many others. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints and absent from the body, present with the Lord.

Dear Margaret and family,
My most sincere condolences on the passing of your mom. No matter how long a life they have lived,it is always hard to say good bye to one's mother. I have such fond memories of times spent in your home on Ash Street. We were always welcomed into your home with such warmth and acceptance. There were late night impromptu parties in the basement, often going well past midnight, with noisy rounds of Dutch Blitz and Twister. In later years, I enjoyed the visits with Leona when we would bump into each other in the grocery store, she wanting to know how we were fairing out there “in our Piney bush”, and catching me up on your life and family, Mugs, in Steinbach. And so we say good bye to yet another of the “old guard” from the EMB Church that was such a positive influence in our lives during our teen and young adult years, in both big and small ways.
Sincerely,
Elaine Friesen

We came to Art and Leona's house as MCC trainees from Switzerland in August 1974 for half a year. We also experienced Leona as described in the obituary. Art and Leona became our «Canadian parents». We appreciated them very much. They were an example to us in many ways and we shared the faith and life in Jesus Christ. The friendly relationship with them and you as bereaved is still ongoing. We are happy about that and we are grateful for that. God comfort and bless you in this time of mourning.

I have always loved Leona. She was a fun-loving and wise Sunday School teacher, interested in our individual lives. I observed her from afar off and admired her. She was a true mensch. Our thoughts are with the family.

Of all my many memories of Aunt Leona, there was one visit with her that sums up her life and influence on me and my family. As usual we were traveling through and had stopped in Steinbach for a few days. One day Aunt Leona said, “Barry, I’m getting some friends together tonight, and we want to hear what is going on with your work. And we will have lots of questions.” And that’s what happened. She had questions, offered insight, gave encouragement, and shared her wisdom in a way that I will never forget. But that was how she always was—engaged, interested, enthusiastic, full of God’s love...all with a great sense of humor! And I would say the same about Uncle Art. What a blessing to me and my family!

Margaret and family, sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. We have many fond memories of your family as our neighbors on Ash Street and yes, your mother's garden outshone ours. Love from the pioneers of Ash Street, the Kasper girls, Carol, Janice, Sheila and Gail.

She had knowledge of Steinbach's past, and I interviewed her several times for my family history and also a history of the town. Astonishing memory and recall and so much information now has gone with her passing. At the same time, each interview was like a warm chat with a good friend, accompanied by the baking she provided. A lovely person. I will miss her.

"Mrs Rempel" was my best ever Sunday School teacher and I remember certain lessons to this day. I also have fond memories of our families going out on Sunday picnics after church. Years later when I brought my two granddaughters to Pioneer Days, she was a delightful hostess for us all. She truly was a Godly role model and I treasure her input in my life.

Leona and Art were an extraordinary couple. Carol and I would visit them whenever we were in Steinbach. And they returned the favour, visiting us in Waterloo (after their car had been burglarized in Brooklyn!). Leona had the curiosity of a cat, and a soul wise as an owl’s. The earth will be a poorer place for her absence!

Leona was a very wise and compassionate woman. I remember at my mother's funeral years ago she asked me what I would miss most about my mom; I said her matrimonial cake. For years after that a plate of delicious matrimonial cake would periodically arrive on my desk, it had no note but I knew who it was from. It was Leona's way of helping me remember my mother. Thanks Leona, you too will not be forgotten. Tiger
