EULOGY of ALVIN VOTH

I don't know how it's possible to talk about a man who was so integral in the lives of his family and closest friends and only take a few minutes doing so.  It defies logic really, because he was a man who was always present, loved so unconditionally, and is woven into our most precious memories.

Dad's history starts with his birth in Steinbach, MB September 13th, 1954, to Ben and Agatha Voth. He was the 6th child of 9 in the family and was responsible for the many tasks on the family farm growing up.

He was a super hard-working man who did carpet installing for 50 years working full time. He was amazing at what he did and sub-contracted at Wm Dyck’s for the past 18 Years. He was the hardest-working man we've ever known.

He married his sweetheart Martha Dyck July 12, 1975, winning her over with his stellar courting technique which included driving in the country, playing Johnny Cash, all the while, shooting gophers out the window :)

He moved quite often throughout his childhood yet no matter where he was, hockey was the sport he loved. He continued to play for many years even after he was married, bringing his wife and young daughters to late-night hockey games.

Another thing he loved to do was to hunt- there were many nights we would go visit and he was watching the hunting channel or reading his hunting magazine.  Sometimes though, his watching consisted of sitting in his chair with head tilted back, mouth open & snoring, with the T.V. going in the background.  This man could literally sleep anywhere and at the drop of a hat!

For the last 27 years, Dad took part in a yearly tradition of going on a horse riding trip with incredibly close friends that became more like brothers:  Mel Funk, Doug Dyck, Murray Hiebert, Paul Born & Tim Funk.  Although members of the group changed occasionally, it was always a safe place for our Dad to have late-night heart-to hearts, share memories, and take part in riding horse which he loved so much.  He was a cowboy at heart and here was his chance to truly express it.  His depth of love for these brothers was so remarkable and his loyalty was steadfast.

Dad was a man of few words, but when he gave his perspective, you received a huge dose of wisdom. With his family, he was generous with his smiles and he loved nothing more than to help his kids with work projects- which was a blessing to all of us:) He was always doing surprise visits, Tim Hortons coffee in hand, to chat and say hello.

He faithfully watched sports, not only for his kids but his grandkids too - there was hockey, volleyball, and soccer too.  And there were the projects, of which he could literally do anything! Flooring renos, shower tiling and installs, building beds and armoires, the list goes on and on.  Everywhere we look, evidence of his handiwork can be seen.

Dad was always so proud of all of his kids and grandkids and loved our family so much!  You always knew when his heart was overflowing, especially when he'd stop in the middle of what he was saying to bend his head and pinch the bridge of his nose.  It was his classic move and we loved seeing that part of his tender heart displayed so openly.

Though we miss him more than words can capture, we know he received his healing and is rejoicing in heaven. We would like to express special thanks to Nurse Wendy at the HSC, who went above and beyond in her tender, thoughtful care of Dad.

Dad you were the pillar in our family and loved us fiercely! Until we see you again, we’re not saying goodbye, we’re saying we love you & see you later!
