Obituary of Eva Friesen

Peacefully at 2:30 a.m. on March 22, 2002 in Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, MB Eva Friesen went to be with the Lord at the age of 79. Eva was born June 2, 1922 to Jacob and Anna Friesen in Main Centre, SK. When Eva was six months old her parents moved to Mexico only to return a year later. In May 1940 she was baptized upon confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Saskatchewan Sommerfelder Church. July 18 of that same year she married Peter F. Dyck at Gouldtown, SK. They both worked at several jobs to make a living. They rented land at Big Coulee, SK in 1941. Nine years later they purchased the property. This did not work out well so they moved to Grunthal, MB. Here Peter held several jobs like working in saw mills in winter, threshing crews in summer and fall and for various farmers the rest of the time. They adopted Garry & Shirley. A job at the mines’ saw mills took them to Beardmore, ON in 1956. Here Eva did some baby-sitting for a boy whose mother passed away and for a girl whose mother had a serious operation. She continued to care for other children as well. In 1964 they returned to Grunthal to be close to Eva’s parents. Peter did carpenter work until retirement. During this time Eva took in several foster children. They also adopted Barry in 1971. In 1983 they moved to Saskatchewan only to return a short while later. On September 30, 1987 Peter passed away. They had been married for 47 years. Eva lived in the units at Grunthal Menno Home until she met and married Abe T. Friesen of Steinbach on May 12, 1990. With this union she gained a second family. In 1995 Abe & Eva moved to the 55 Plus apartments in Kleefeld, but ill health forced them to move back to Steinbach into the Parkview Apartments. In April 1999 Abe moved to Resthaven. In November 1999 Abe passed away the same week that Eva moved into the Woodhaven Apartments. Eva made one last trip when she flew to BC in July of 2000 to see her family. Slowly ill health began to limit her activities. For the past year and a half Eva was in and out of the hospital several times. She managed to keep up a social life between doctor appointments and hospitalizations. Almost all of 2002 was spent in Bethesda Hospital as she slowly gave in to diabetes, a weak heart and failing kidneys. She leaves to cherish her memory from her first family: one daughter Shirley Lyn of San Francisco, CA, grandson Barry (Michelle) Dyck and great grandson Joshua; one son Garry (Elaine) Dyck of Abbotsford, BC, grandson Ebben (Bobbi Jo) Aries and great grandson Akiel. From her second family: one daughter Hilda (Richard) Martens, grandson Robert (Sheila) Martens with great grandchildren Jameson, Ryan and Spencer; grandson Darren (Jennifer) Martens with great grandchildren Braeden, Meyson and Foster; grandsons Sheldon (Lisa) Martens and Everley (Verna) Martens; one son John (Helen) Friesen. She is also survived by two brothers and their wives, one sister and many friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her parents, two husbands, two brothers, two sisters, one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law. The funeral Service for Eva Friesen was held Monday, March 25, 2002 10:00 a.m. at the Steinbach Chorititzer Mennonite Church. Interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB. In lieu of flowers if friends so desire donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Special thanks go to all who so faithfully visited Eva at home or in the hospital, the Steinbach area homecare personnel and the nurses and doctors who treated her so very well. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 The Family
